Ten Fourteen Eighteen B1G Things

  1. Iowa decided to cover that total all on their own this time.

  2. So did Indiana, but we know that would happen.

  3. It’s OK guys, Bryce Underwood will pay off next year.

  4. No, seriously.

  5. I’m pretty sure Penn State will have to forfeit their bowl game with the amount of outputs they’re about to get.

  6. Jesus guys, from the 37? From the 33?!

The Rundown

It’s Iowa

They do it again. It’s now the 7th time they’ve beaten Nebraska in Memorial Stadium, which puts Ferentz at second in Big Ten wins at Memorial Stadium, behind Bo Pelini and ahead of Scott Frost, Mike Riley, and Matt Rhule, who all have six.

At least it wasn’t 66

Not that anyone expected a different result from Indiana and Purdue.

BoilerUp89: Like Purdue’s athletic department, I don’t care about football and am focusing my attention on basketball.

BuffKomodo: Perfection!

The Indiana Hoosiers complete a perfect regular season for the first time in program history. It’s amazing how far this program has come in about 2 years time.

Having punched their ticket to Indy for the CCG, Indiana now waits for what looks to be a predestined date with Ohio State. The Hoosiers have not beaten the Buckeyes since the 80’s. It really is the last ghost left to excise from the program. We will see what happens.

Also, I’m having fun.

Narrator: As a person who’s seen his team at or near the top, I’m genuinely happy for you. Everyone deserves to have this feeling at least once.

HoustonBoiler: Woof! Thankfully, I didn’t watch that disaster. Purdue did score 3 points and held Indiana under 60, so that’s progress, I guess. At least the #11 Purdue volleyball team came through and beat #15 Indiana 3-1 and the basketball team beat Eastern Illinois so the weekend was not a total loss.

Ohio State finally does it!

Has a team been more oppressed than these poor Buckeyes, who had to settle for national championships over wins against Michigan?

Also: welcome to Penn State, Brian Hartline!

MaximumSam: The emotion was real. Cryin’ Ryan Day was actually tearing up. The persistent snowfall made for a beautiful football game. It was almost enough to make me forget that this game was over by the middle of the third quarter. The Buckeyes this season have been an exercise in dominance, and we are still uncertain what will happen when the game is one the line late. Thinking a lot about the 2019 Buckeyes lately.

Brian Gillis: Michigan’s bid for five in a row against Ohio State came up short, as the Buckeyes got the monkey off their back with a dominant victory in Ann Arbor.

The same manner in which Michigan won the last four games in this rivalry is how Ohio State won this one: By being the better team in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Decidedly.

Rockymtnblue: Well this was the game we expected last year.  One of these teams was a decent, super young team.  The other was a national title favorite.  This year, unlike 3 of the last 4, it went according to script.  Alas.  Now we’re a fucking basketball school.

A fitting end

Penn State loses to Rutgers for the first time since 1988, mercifully ending its season of disappointment.

Hey at least Kaytron Allen eclipsed 4,000 rushing yards and Nicholas Singleton broke the career touchdown record.

…is what I would have said if Rutgers didn’t Rutgers all over themselves. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

It’s no longer September, part 38

You know, for the amount of points they let Michigan State score. The most a power team not named Boston College has allowed against Michigan State all season.

Larry31: Sparty beat Terpy. Nobody cares. This game was about who is shittier. Victory in this game is not an indicator of success. I’m so checked out, I didn’t watch a single second of this game. At least Terps men’s soccer moved on to the quarterfinals and are a legitimate national title contender.

Both of these teams punted from inside the 40.

Doing the bare minimum, personified! Hey at least it worked for P.J. Fleck this time!

WhiteSpeedReceiver: BOOP

I have seen many Gopher-badger games where the outcome was never really in question, but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen one here in Minneapolis where the good guys had things well in hand from start to finish. The defense gave up one (1) play and otherwise smothered the popcorn skunks. Minnesota finished the year undefeated at home for the first time since 1967 including belt-to-ass performances against Nebraska and wisconsin, and that’s pretty nice.

Also, Minnesota once again leads the all-time series. We have corrected the bullshit caused by Barry Alvarez clutching and holding his way to wisconsin being relevant and are moving towards making the world a better place for everyone worth caring about.

Oregon now has a winning streak against Washington

The demons have been exorcised, or something!

…welcome to Penn State, Jedd Fisch!

Apparently USC and UCLA were tied at some point

Man what having a competent defensive coordinator does to a MFer.

…welcome to Penn State, D’Anton Lynn!

I’ve been told the hat stays with Illinois

How many times have both of these teams already been bowl eligible by the time they played each other? At least in this new world of “we end the season with each other” thing they got going on.

LincolnParkWildcat: well shit. the HAT will remain in the desolate hellhole known as chambana under the cruel custody the sneering Bert Bielema for another year. Our team played sloppy and turned the ball over too many times. It also didn’t help that we were injury depleted, most notably by our running back Komolafe. Oh well. Onto a bowl game perhaps.

AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisement

He Was A High School QB: Illinois only had 3 interceptions in the first 11 games.  We had 3 today and that was enough to beat a meh wildcat team. HAT! HAT! HAT!

thumpasaurus: All the signs pointed to an Illini loss. Senior day. Apocalyptic blizzard conditions leading to no fans allowed on the east side. All the momentum against Illinois, with their opponent. Opposing coach comes out as Jesusball guy. Weather conditions make offensive line play paramount. Great khan Pritzker counting on Illinois to deliver great justice.

It would have been so easy to do what virtually every other Illini team I’ve ever seen does in this situation, and although the offensive line never showed up, Bielema had a rare boneheaded move (to not take the points early) and the obligatory Illini catastrophe happened (turnover inside our own 5 after forcing a fourth down stop), they found a way to win the game. Preston Stone deserves the game ball for finding so many creative ways to lose possession. Illinois now has a winning record against Notre Golden Horseshoe Haver David Braun, and should have had a shot at overtime in the 2023 game because the DPI no-call on the two pointer was horseshit.

Illinois has achieved back to back winning seasons for the first time in 35 years. Make no mistake, this is as close as we’ll ever get to another golden age. We’re living it. It’s up to Bielema how long he wants to keep it going, because that will require making some changes to this coaching staff and getting aggressive in the transfer portal to address the negligence in recruiting and development on the offensive line. If he really wants to compete at a high level…he’ll give Sam Pittman a call.

In scores of other games…

Manny Diaz has taken Duke to the ACC title game because when they got rid of divisions, they let Coastal Chaos spread. And spread it did!

…also, welcome back to Penn State, Manny Diaz!
