The excitement around Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is growing with each new piece of information. The historical epic marks the director’s first film after his Oscar win and contains a cast of frequent collaborators, also marking a first for Matt Damon as the leading man of a Nolan movie. While many details are still shrouded in mystery, slowly and steadily, the character information is trickling down. Now we finally know who Robert Pattinson and Zendaya are playing in the upcoming movie.
New images revealed by Empire Magazine show The Batman star as Antinous, the arrogant and cruel leader of the suitors in Homer's Odyssey. Meanwhile, Dune franchise star Zendaya is seen alongside Damon as Odysseus' advocate, protector, and mentor, Athena. The new images are a testament to each actor's prowess and the filmmaker's attention to detail.
'The Odyssey' has Been Brewing in Christopher Nolan’s Mind for Decades
The upcoming movie will trace the titular character’s journey back home after the Trojan war. Nolan recently revealed that the idea of the feature has been long in his mind, “I’d actually been hired to direct Troy years ago. So I’ve been dreaming of this world for decades,” he revealed. But for him, The Odyssey is more than a myth, “There’s a bit of everything in it. I mean, it truly contains all stories.”
The scope of the film is obviously grand with Nolan’s penchant for practical effects, large-scale stunts, and belief in real-world filmmaking. As for the budget, the movie has an estimated budget of $250 million, and is the most expensive of the director’s career. It also marks his first film to be shot entirely on IMAX's 70 mm film cameras. “As a filmmaker, you’re always looking for gaps in cinematic culture — things that haven’t been done before. What I saw was that all of this great mythological work that I grew up with — Ray Harryhausen movies and other things — I’d never seen that done with the kind of weight and credibility a big Hollywood, IMAX production could bring,” the director said.
Starring in the movie are Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Pattinson as Antinous, as well as Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo. Also starring are Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Rafi Gavron, Shiloh Fernandez, and many more.
The Odyssey is set for a July 17, 2026, release. You can check out the new images above and stay tuned to Collider for more updates on the upcoming movie.
