UND wide receiver B.J. Fleming, who leads the team in receiving yards, was injured last Saturday against South Dakota State.

Fleming made the trip to Tennessee and warmed up before the game. However, he didn't play against the Golden Eagles.

Instead, the injury opened the door for Deng Deng, who finished with 5 catches for 73 yards and a 21-yard touchdown reception in the first half.

Deng's touchdown catch was his fifth of the season but his first since Oct. 4. The Four Winds High School product went five games in the middle of the season without a catch.

When UND's offense was struggling in the first half, UND's defense remained dominant.

The Fighting Hawks haven't given up a single point on an opponent's opening drive of the game all season.

UND hasn't given up a touchdown in the first quarter since playing Montana on Sept. 13.

UND went to senior Gaven Ziebarth late in the game to spark the ground game, but the Hawks also utilized Colton Brunell, a redshirt freshman from Wisconsin.

Brunell had nine carries for 40 yards and an 8-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

UND running back Sawyer Seidl had 14 carries for 42 yards but didn't play much late in the game after fumbling in the third quarter.

Simon Romfo started the season as the third option at quarterback but UND needed Romfo in a big way against Tennessee Tech.

With backup Javance Tupou'ata-Johnson out for the season with a leg injury, Romfo filled in for starter Jerry Kaminski, who was hurt on UND's first drive of the second half and didn't return.

Romfo, UND's 2024 helped the offense score three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

"We've got all the trust and belief in Simon," UND running back Gaven Ziebarth said. "Simon has been in these kind of games, too. No matter what, he's giving us his all. He's a kid that's just going to keep fighting. I'm just happy for him and getting his opportunity."

Gaven Ziebarth played against Tennessee Tech for the first time since suffering a broken collarbone six weeks ago.

Without being ready to return for UND's regular-season finale last Saturday against South Dakota State, Ziebarth's playing days were up in the air ahead of the tournament bracket reveal.

"When I first got hurt initially, I thought it was over," said Ziebarth, who was injured at the end of a long run against Southern Illinois. "I've never had a broken bone before. The docs and trainers do a really good job here, and they were able to reassure me that if I worked hard maybe I'd be back for the playoffs."
