Florida pulling ahead in the Jon Sumrall sweepstakes, per reports; Auburn is out

In what will be a crazy offseason in college football, the dominoes are starting to fall. Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall has been a name to watch this season as he has been rumored for a head job in the SEC.

On Saturday afternoon, Pete Thamel of ESPN reported that Florida was emerging as the favorite to land Sumrall.

Later, Brandon Marcello of CBS Sports gave his own update on the Sumrall sweepstakes.

Just after college football kicked off on rivalry week Saturday, Marcello tweeted. “Florida has pulled ahead of Auburn in recent hours as Jon Sumrall weighs leaving Tulane. Sumrall could also be in the mix for the Ole Miss job if it opens.”

In addition, the Auburn Tigers are reportedly out for Sumrall, according to John Brice of Football Scoop. Auburn was viewed as the strong favorite for Sumrall entering the week, but it appears he likes the prospects of coaching at Florida more.

Sumrall, who started his coaching career at Kentucky as a graduate assistant during the 2005 and 2006 seasons, is rising in the college football ranks at a rapid pace. The second-year Tulane coach could be in line for the next big-time SEC job.

With Tulane still having a good chance to make the College Football Playoff, Sumrall will have a big decision to make in the coming days. The Green Wave is currently the highest-ranked Group of 5 team, sitting at No.24 in this week’s CFP rankings.

If Sumrall lands at Florida, Kentucky hosts the Gators next season, so that would be a painful homecoming to watch for Big Blue Nation.
