In the second quarter of The Game, facing a 4th-and-5, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jeremiah Smith to give the Buckeyes a 10-6 lead.

But should the touchdown have stood? As you can see from the video below, Smith bobbled the ball as he was crossing the goal line before stepping out of bounds.

FOX rules analyst Mike Pereira thought it should have been a touchback, which would have taken the seven points off the board and given Michigan the ball back. Play-by-play announcer Joel Klatt agreed with Periera, as did some college football officials that texted with college football pundit Josh Pate.

To me, the video play makes it look like Smith didn’t have clear possession of the ball. Michigan should have been given the ball at the 20 yard line, and Ohio State shouldn’t have scored a touchdown. But alas, the officials in this game have been making questionable calls both ways up to this point, so it doesn’t shock me that the ruling on the field was upheld.
