The North Carolina Tar Heels' bowl eligibility hopes came to a screeching halt Saturday night, thanks to their disappointing, 32-25 loss against Duke.
UNC (4-7, 2-5 ACC) took an early fourth-quarter lead, thanks to Davion Gause's 12-yard touchdown and a Rece Verhoff extra point, but defense collapsed on the Blue Devils' ensuing possession.

The Wolfpack (6-5, 3-4 ACC) clinched bowl eligibility last weekend against Florida State, so this may be a meaningless game in their fans' eyes, but the Tar Heels are playing for pride.
The last time UNC won in this heated rivalry matchup was 2020, a 48-21 result in which now-Dallas Cowboys running back Javonte Williams exploded for 160 rushing yards and three touchdowns. North Carolina won the previous year in Raleigh, too, a 41-10 beating anchored by Sam Howell's 401 passing yards and three touchdowns.
State provided some bulletin board material for the Tar Heels this offseason. Wolfpack QB CJ Bailey said his team would kill UNC, even with Bill Belichick in charge, while running back Hollywood Smothers created a dartboard with Belichick's face on it.
If North Carolina isn't fired up for Saturday, State wins by a big margin. The Tar Heels are only playing for pride, as they're missing a bowl game for the first time since 2018.
