After a Strong Run, This Relentless WWII Crowd-Pleaser Is Losing Its Grip on Streaming

With the sequel in theaters now, Sisu is slowly losing its grip on streaming charts both in the U.S. and internationally after a strong few months.

It's been roughly two years since one of the most relentless and praiseworthy WWII movies arrived in U.S. theaters, and it's still getting significant attention. From writer-director Jalmari Helander, Sisu tells a brutal story about Aatami Korpi (Jorma Tommila), a Finnish Army commando-turned-gold prospector who goes to extreme lengths to recover his stolen gold from the Nazis during the last desperate days of World War II. The war movie recently resurfaced on streaming charts, amid its sequel, Sisu: Road to Revenge's theatrical run; however, it now appears to be slowly drifting down the charts.

About a week ago, we reported that Sisu became a free streaming sensation, ranking among the 10 most popular movies on Tubi in the U.S. At the same time, it dominated other streaming services internationally, including Starz in the UAE, the Apple TV Store in Canada, Netflix in Finland, and Prime Video in Singapore, among others. Currently, Sisu is nearing the tenth most-watched movie on Tubi after being among the top five just days ago.

Sisu originally debuted at TIFF on September 9, 2022, which was followed by a premiere in Finland on January 27, 2023, before landing in the U.S. As fans already know, the historical thriller was an immediate favorite among critics and audiences, as reflected in its respective 94% and 88% RT scores. It also performed averagely well at the box office, grossing twice its $7 million budget, including $7.3 million in the U.S. and Canada, and $7 million in other territories.

Will There Be a Sequel to 'Sisu'?

The sequel to Sisu was released last weekend and has already grossed $6 million worldwide. As its theatrical run progresses, fans are eager for a threequel, and filmmaker Helander, who also directed Road to Revenge, recently weighed in. The end of the 2025 movie sees Aatami finally rebuild his home with the help of the community after he was able to kill Igor (Stephen Lang) to avenge the death of his family. Helander admittedly finds it to be the perfect conclusion for Aatami, as he shared: "I like to think that this is a very beautiful ending for the story of Aatami Korpi, but at the same time, you never know. Some day I might have an idea for the third one. Let's see."

Sisu is streaming on Tubi while its sequel plays in theaters. Stick with Collider for future updates.
