ACC Roundup – Two Buzzer Beaters And A Couple Of Blowouts

Pitt and Stanford will remember these games for a very long time

In Friday’s ACC Action, Virginia Tech fell to VCU, 86-68, Wake Forest held on against Northeastern 86-73, Virginia trumped Queens 94-69, Florida State got trashed by Texas A&M 95-59, Miami took out Georgetown 78-65, Stanford nipped Saint Louis 78-77 in thrilling fashion, Clemson vandalized Alabama A&M 92-56, DePaul handled Georgia Tech 75-61, SMU got by Mississippi State 87-81 in overtime and Pitt sent Ohio State to bed with no supper, winning 67-61 on a dramatic buzzer beater, 67-66.

The end was dramatic but the game was not a masterpiece or anything. Pitt shot just 23% from deep and 38% overall. Minor, Cam Corhen and Brandon Dunning all hit for 18.

Pitt only went seven deep and the bench players produced minimally, with 0 points, 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 1 block.

Still, a win is a win and that’s a great win for Pitt. Minor’s grandkids will talk about it one day.

Virginia Tech had some adversity against VCU, playing without Tobi Lawal and Neoklis Avdalas playing hurt. And on top of that former Duke guard Jaden Schutt got in foul trouble, which limited him to 23 minutes. He still got 15 points though.

It was a tough loss but under the circumstances, not a nightmare.

Tre’Von Spillers and Juke Harris are developing into a reliable duo for Wake Forest. Spillers had 17 points (8-11) and 10 boards, while Harris got 17 of his own.

Harris, a sophomore, is averaging 20 mpg and 7.7 rebounds while Spiller is getting 14.7 points and 6.0 boards. Harris, btw, is hitting 42.1% on threes.

This wasn’t, or at least shouldn’t have been, a hugely challenging game for Wake, but the Deacs got it and are now 6-2. Decent.

Thijs De Ridder was too much for Queens: the Belgian big guy hit 8-10/2-3 for 21 points in 21 minutes. Johann Grünloh had 13 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Freshman guard Chance Mallory is coming off the bench still, but he looks like he could easily start. He had 11 points here, 4 assists and 8 rebounds, which is even more impressive when y0u remember he’s about 5-9. Wow.

Not a serious opponent but fun for the Wahoo fans who must get jolted by 94 point games like sugar hits a diabetic after the oh-so-deliberate era of Tony Bennett.

Yes, we know he won a national championship that way. He also lost to a 16 seed that way, too.

FSU got thoroughly trashed by Texas A&M where Buckyball appears to be settling in nicely.

Named for new coach Bucky McMillan, he preaches an aggressive defense and a hot-shot offense that runs and guns.

Worked here: FSU had 16 turnovers as A&M pressed: 13 of those turnovers were steals. Now playing for Texas A&M: one-time Duke commit Mackenzie Mgabo. He had 10 here and fouled out in eight minutes.

Robert McCray, who has played well for the ‘Noles, was held to 1-10 from the floor. He also had 4 of FSU’s turnovers.

Miami wasn’t messing around with Georgetown: the ‘Canes went up 41-20 at the half on the back of a 23-8 run. The Hurricane shot 59% from behind the line and 59% overall. The Hoyas really struggled but given Lucas’s defensive credentials, that’s not a surprise. Huge win for Miami because Georgetown is clearly improving under Ed Cooley.

Benny Gealer, who didn’t want DaMarco Minor getting all the buzzer-beating glory, was held scoreless by St. Louis for about 59:57 of the game.

That last bit is going to keep them up tonight because Gealer hit a great buzzer beater here. For our money, this might be better than Minor’s shot. What a moment for that kid. And the shot itself is just gorgeous.

Ebuka Okorie had 17 here but shot poorly (3-14/3-8).

Clemson blew out Alabama A&M by 36 but big deal. It was never going to be a fair fight. The Tigers started with a 27-4 run and that, as they say, was all she wrote.

It won’t be that easy soon with Alabama and BYU up next.

Memo to Mighty Mouse: get some damn three point shooters – they’ll save the day.

Well, maybe, but 2-18, 11%? That’s pretty bad. And 38% overall is not much better. Baye Ndongo was held to just 6 points inside too.

Damon Stoudamire has had good nights at Tech and will have more. This was just not one of them.

Boopie Miller and Jarron Pierre led SMU to an OT win over Mississippi State.Pierre got a three point play and Miller hit his free throws to tie the game at 72-72 with under a minute left. And then, after the Bulldogs got a basket, Miller tied it up again and then took charge in OT as well.

Miller finished with 28 points while Pierre got 24 of his own.

Only one game Saturday as Georgia Tech plays Drake in the consolation game of the Emerald Coast Classic.
