A Texas high school football official is under scrutiny after directing multiple expletives in the direction toward the sideline during a state playoff game Nov. 28.

In a video taken by KFDX’s Ben Coker, the head referee of the Class 3A Division II regional semifinal playoff game between Gunter and Henrietta can be seen motioning the ejection of a Henrietta player.

Shortly after that, the referee looks toward the Henrietta sideline and angrily yells something. While he can’t be heard in the video, Coker said to the Times Record News that the referee used multiple expletives before clenching both fists to his eyes to replicate a crying child.

“It was a hornet’s nest at this point,” Coker said. “Every fan on both sides are on their feet, screaming at the referees, screaming at the fans on the other side of the field. It was chaos.”

A call to Henrietta coach Jay Jones for comment was not immediately returned.

Coker felt both teams were committing unsportsmanlike fouls that were not being called by the officials until late in the game once Gunter had amassed a sizable lead in what was a 41-6 victory.

It all came to a head when a Henrietta player was ejected after engaging with a Gunter player. The head referee had already thrown his flag and hat, indicating two penalties, and got engaged verbally with another Henrietta player.

The referee took off his shoe and threw it, apparently to signal another infraction. That is when the video picks up with the referee making the ejection motion.
