Update: 9:46 a.m. ET

Opening Bell

The U.S. markets are now open. As expected, stocks are up, with the Dow (+0.42%) and Russell 2000 (+0.38%) leading the indexes out. The S&P 500 (+0.38%) and Nasdaq (+0.04%) also rose, reflecting hopes of a turnaround close to other week.

S&P Global Composite & Consumer Sentiment Sees Small Beat

Not long after the open, the S&P Global CompositeFlash and the Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index released. The former came in at 54.8 (vs. 54.6 in October), while the latter came in at 51 (vs. 53.6). Both were higher than analyst expectations. Current expectations were the most precarious, falling to 51.1 (from 58.6 last month).

A.M. Update

Good morning. There's a little less than an hour left until the market opens. Futures currently show the Russell 2000 (+0.77%) out in front, followed by the Dow (+0.56%), Nasdaq (+0.55%), and S&P 500 (+0.55%) in a near-tie.

Stocks are rising after a tepid Thursday, which saw stocks have one of their most volatile days in recent memory. The Nasdaq started the day on an over 2% tare, while the S&P 500 was up more than 1% out of the gate. But by midday, all of the indexes had turned over.

There's hope that today will be different; that today will turn around a week that should've been positive: Nvidia's strong earnings, Alphabet's new industry-leading Gemini 3 Pro AI model, and a solid September jobs report were reasons enough to celebrate. However, there are still signs of worry in the market. Japan's SoftBank fell over 10% in overseas trading, reflecting concerns about AI are by no means a domestic-only festivity.

Here are today's stories to watch:

Economic Events + Data

Today is expected to be a busy one for economic insights, especially by Friday standards. Fed leaders Williams, Barr, Jefferson, Collins, and Logan will be speaking this morning. Following their remarks, we'll get a look at the S&P Global Composite PMI (10:45 a.m. ET) and the Michigan Consumer Sentiment Final (November) just a few minutes later.
