A new Transformers and GI Joe crossover show is officially in the works, and it is hard not to see how it could be the perfect franchise game changer after Michael Bay's movies.
Michael Bay's Transformers movies always left viewers and critics. However, years after their release, it cannot be denied that they benefited the overarching franchise in more ways than one. They might have focused a little too much on spectacle, but their incredible box office numbers prove that they got a lot of things right and found a way to appeal to larger audiences.
The new Transformers films have been intriguing in their own unique ways, but they have struggled to recreate the wide commercial success of Michael Bay's movies. From the looks of it, an upcoming Transformers TV show will now throttle the franchise in a new direction and potentially pull it out of its liminal state.
Upcoming Transformers GI Joe Show Benefits From Its Source Material
Optimus Prime in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Soon after Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, it was hard not to believe that the next live-action movie in the franchise would focus on a crossover between Transformers and GI Joe. While the future of the live-action movie remains unknown, a new animated TV series is in the works. The upcoming show will be based on the recent Energon Universe comics, which have already earned immense critical acclaim.
More often than not, crossovers from GI Joe and other franchises were shoehorned into the Transformers universe in the past. The comics stand out among these crossovers because they build a shared universe from the ground up. Their lore perfectly establishes how the Joes only exist because of the arrival of the Cybertronians on Earth.
The Show Has A Solid Creative Team
TRANSFORMERS G.I. JOE ENERGON UNIVERSE SHARED UNIVERSE
The upcoming show also benefits from the fact that Robert Kirkman, who created the shared fictional Energon Universe, is serving as its executive producer through his company Skybound Entertainment. Kirkman is also known for being the mastermind behind Prime Video's hit animated series, Invincible, and The Walking Dead.
Joe Henderson serves as the series' showrunner and main writer. He is best known for his work in the critically and commercially successful series, Lucifer. With two creative powerhouses behind the show, it is hard not to believe it is on the right path towards giving the Transformers franchise a much-needed course-correction.
The Transformers Crossover Series’ Focus On Adults Can Be A Game Changer

It has been confirmed that the upcoming Transformers and GI Joe crossover show will specifically have an adult-focused tone. While this could potentially limit its reach, it ensures it shows everything from the geopolitical drama to the military realism that made the Michael Bay movies so successful. The franchise's history forces one to be cautiously optimistic about the show, but it undoubtedly has a lot of potential.
