EAST RUTHERFORD − To beat the best, St. Joseph needed to play the Best.
After missing the Green Knights’ regular-season game against Don Bosco, quarterback Lamar Best was front and center in the Non-Public A football final.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementHis 10-yard touchdown in the third quarter held up as the game-winner, and his scrambling helped preserve St. Joseph’s 24-21 victory on Nov. 28 at MetLife Stadium.
The Green Knights (10-2) secured their first state championship since 2018 and ended Don Bosco’s bid for an unbeaten season. The Ironmen (11-1) had prevailed on Oct. 11 in Montvale, 17-14 in overtime.
The St. Joseph defense held Don Bosco on a fourth-and-6 at its own 34 with 47 seconds remaining.
Best added a 38-yard touchdown pass to Stalin Knowlden, and Nate Bailey scored on a 35-yard TD run.
