Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ highly anticipated upcoming sequel will finally tell a story that Disney has ignored for multiple years. Since A New Hope premiered on May 25, 1977, Star Wars has grown into a sci-fi franchise that is not afraid to expand and take risks in new and interesting ways.

One of the most surprising was the introduction of animated TV shows that were part of the movie canon. Luckily, this choice paid off. Star Wars: The Clone Wars is still the best Star Wars TV show ever made. The writing is impeccable, developing familiar faces, like Anakin Skywalker, in interesting ways and introducing new characters, like Asoka, who would become fan-favorites.

However, one of the best changes The Clone Wars made to characters was the reintroduction of Darth Maul, who finally had his time to shine. However, that doesn’t mean the Star Wars franchise is without fault when it comes to storytelling. Disney continually ignored one story that needed to be told after The Clone Wars, but now they’re rectifying the issue.

Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord Will Reveal What Happened To Maul After Clone Wars

There was always a weird gap between Clone Wars and Solo where we don’t know exactly what is going on with Darth Maul. The good news is that Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will take the time to fill in the gaps. The show’s premise explains that he’ll be rebuilding a criminal enterprise and training a new apprentice. This is possibly one of the most interesting storylines they’ve ever given him.

Star Wars Has Done A Lot With Darth Maul, But Shadow Lord Is The Story We Need

Darth Maul's face in Star Wars

Darth Maul has become a staple in the Star Wars franchise since his debut in Phantom Menace. Even though he seemingly died in that movie, he comes back in The Clone Wars, which they actually explained. Then, after The Clone Wars season 7, he appears in Solo and Rebels.

Maul: Shadow Lord is expected to premiere in 2026.

Perhaps we’ve seen too much of Darth Maul at this point. He’s a great character, but he developed plot armor because of how much Star Wars fans love him. Even Executive producer Athena Portillo described Maul as the “seemingly eternal villain” akin to slasher villains who never stay dead (via IGN)

If they’re going to insist on using him in this way, rather than moving on from the character, I’m glad they’re taking the time to fill in the gaps with Shadow Lord. This story could justify the franchise’s continued use of him in later parts of the franchise like Solo and Rebels.
