Dec. 11, 2015: Less than a minute remained in the game, and Berlin Brothersvalley held a three-point advantage. An appearance in the PIAA Class 1A championship game was within reach.

But District 10 champion Farrell’s playmaking quarterback Alex Myers found 6-foot-2 receiver Marcus McCoy behind defenders. McCoy pulled in the pass inside the Berlin Brothersvalley 40-yard line and raced to the end zone for a 76-yard touchdown reception. He also ran the two-point conversion in with 44 seconds left at Penn Hills High School

The Steelers edged the Mountaineers 26-21, ending a historic season by the District 5-1A champions, who a week earlier had upset District 7 power Clairton.

“They made one more play than we did,” Berlin Brothersvalley coach Doug Paul said after the game. “They got the ball last and they made one more play.”

Berlin Brothersvalley finished 13-1 in 2015 and won its second straight District 5 title.

“It was wonderful to be a part of this team,” said Mountaineers senior Braden Fochtman after rushing for 152 yards and two touchdowns despite playing through a hip injury suffered early in the win over Clairton a week earlier.

“I wouldn’t want to be a part of any other team,” Fochtman said. “I’ve got to thank my teammates.”

Farrell took a 14-1 record into the PIAA championship game.

District 6-1A champion Bishop Guilfoyle beat the Steelers 35-0 at Hersheypark Stadium.
