Florida bounced back from a loss to TCU with a 90-78 win over the Providence Friars on Friday.

Five players scored double figures, but the story of the night is Xaivian Lee breaking out of his slump. After making just seven 3-pointers all year, Lee drained four against Providence. He led all scorers with 20 points and was all smiles after the game. With all the negative attention Lee has received through the first six games, this one had to feel good. The feeling is that Lee's struggles were mostly mental, and this could flip the script for him and the entire offense.

Turnovers have been the other bugaboo for this Gators squad. Both Todd Golden and Urban Klavzar discussed it on Thursday, believing that fewer turnovers would have led to a win over TCU. The proof is in the pudding, and the pudding was turnover-free on Friday, albeit against a less aggressive defensive team.

Alex Condon sat out for this one, resting after taking a shot to the face on Thursday. He looked healthy and fine during the game, and pregame reports confirmed that the move was mostly precautionary. With Florida set to take on Duke and UConn in the coming weeks, the Gators need Condon at full health. His sitting also opened the door for Micah Handlogten to get extra minutes, which he took full advantage of.

Xaivian Lee needed this

Lee's shooting struggles this season are well-documented. Todd Golden has acknowledged the issue and deemed it more mental than physical, which is apparent to anyone watching each game. Nothing does more for the mental than watching the ball go through the net.

Lee, determined to break the slump, only took 3-pointers in the first half. While he entered the break 1-of-4 from deep, he opened the second half with a pair of buckets. The bench was falling all over itself, literally, on the first one — Lee broke some ankles before letting it fly.

He went right back to it on the next possession and drained it. Lee almost had three in a row, but he just missed off the back iron as the shot clock expired. Even with the miss, that's three consecutive good looks.

Did he let it get to his head? Nope. Lee gave up a semi-open 3-pointer a few possessions later and dished it to Boogie Fland on the wing. Bucket.

Shooting can be contagious, and everyone seemed to play with more energy once Lee started making shots. He finished with a game-high 20 points, making four 3s in the process. Boogie Fland (17 points, 6-18 FG, 4-10 3PT) also got going after a rough first half.

If Lee can play like this moving forward, Florida has a chance to be the team everyone expected it to be.

Valuing possessions pays off

A day after turning the ball over 19 times over 74 possessions (25.7%), Florida gave it away just eight times over 70 possessions (11.4%), including just three in the second half. Ruben Chinyelu led the team with three, Haugh and Lee each had two, and Fland had one.

Golden harped on "valuing possessions" after the loss to TCU, and Urban Klavzar confirmed that was the focus in the locker room. Whatever was said got through to the players. An intentional effort to protect the possessions paid off, even after a couple of quick turnovers in the first half.

Perhaps even more encouraging are the 18 assists Florida had — two more than the season average through six games. Sometimes, turnovers go down because the team is afraid to move the ball around. TCU cut off passing lanes almost at will on Thursday, but that didn't force Florida to back down. They played their game, and every starter but finished with three or more assists.

Duke and UConn are not Providence

All due respect to Providence, but this is what national championship contenders are supposed to do against lesser teams. Lee used it as a chance to break out of his slump, and the bigs got some extra work while resting Alex Condon.

The next two games will be infinitely more difficult to win. Arizona's Koa Peat dominated the frontcourt battle in the season opener against Florida. Duke has another elite freshman in Cameron Boozer. Stopping him is paramount, and the Gators need every bit of energy from Condon, Chinyelu and Micah Handlogten.

Handlogten got a season-high 24 minutes against Providence. His previous high was 23 against Arizona, and the conditioning wasn't quite there. He's moving well now, switching comfortably and rebounding on both sides of the glass.

Looking at the bigger picture, this was a great setup game for Florida ahead of what might be the toughest two-game stretch in college basketball. Still, Golden and Co. need to keep their heads on straight. Any regression almost certainly means two losses in the coming weeks.
