Starring Russell Crowe and Rami Malek in the lead roles, Nuremberg follows the Nazi war criminal Hermann Göring during his trial after World War 2. The movie opened to mostly positive reviews that highlighted Crowe's central performance as Göring, and has been greatly helped in its theatrical run by the audience's response. Nuremberg is sitting at a near-perfect 96% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, effectively guaranteeing resounding success on the home video market. However, the film's theatrical performance can only be described as so-so, seeing as it's still trailing one of the genre's biggest underperformers by a large margin.
With $11 million domestically so far, Nuremberg has grossed only a third of what Clint Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers closed its run with nearly two decades ago. Flags of Our Fathers was one half of a remarkable cinematic experiment by Eastwood, which presented the same historical event through two different perspectives. While Flags of Our Fathers presented the American perspective on the Battle of Iwo Jima, its companion piece, Letters from Iwo Jima, presented the Japanese perspective. Incidentally, Letters from Iwo Jima is considered the better movie of the two; it grossed nearly $70 million worldwide against a reported budget of $19 million, while Flags of Our Fathers failed to recover its reported $90 million budget, grossing $65 million globally. Letters from Iwo Jima also holds a superior 91% score on RT, compared to the 76% score of Flags of Our Fathers.
'Nuremberg' Is Taking Heat From 'Sisu 2'
Nuremberg, on the other hand, is currently sitting at a 70% score on the aggregator, where the critics' consensus reads, "Driven by a commanding performance from Russell Crowe, Nuremberg is a handsomely crafted historical drama, but its measured pacing and emotional restraint keep it from fully realizing the complexity of its subject." Directed by James Vanderbilt, Nuremberg also features Leo Woodall, Colin Hanks, Michael Shannon, and others. The movie is playing in theaters, where it's receiving direct competition from the more recent Sisu: Road to Revenge. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
