Superhero fans were promised one massive fight-to-the-death tournament in the DC Universe, and now that fistfight has officially begun. With the first rounds of the DC K.O. event killing heroes left and right, and transforming others into god-tier monsters, the one-on-one matches can begin. But with Superman getting his rematch against the deadliest of DC's heroes, will the Man of Steel finally redeem his most embarrassing defeat?
Superman Must Fight Captain Atom To The Death in DC K.O.
DC K.O. Superman vs. Captain Atom #1 by Josh Williamson, Sean Izaakse, Trish Mulvihill, Jorge Corona
The title fight for "DC's deadliest weapon" officially begins in the first preview pages for Superman vs. Captain Atom, already giving the advantage to the nuclear man. Despite the fate of all reality at hand, Superman's wholesome nature means he's still not ready to unleash his full Kryptonian power set. But that's no issue for Nathaniel Adam, who's been waiting years to tee off on an opponent as annoying as a finger-wagging Superman. And as one of DC's most underrated powerhouses, Captain Atom is a contender.
Like all the fights in this new elimination round of the DC K.O. tournament, the battle demands each opponent fight to win two out of three rounds. But a new wrinkle has been added to the mix, with the requirement that a downed opponent will "choose a form" to perform better in the subsequent round. What that means, both in general and for Atom and Superman, is up to reader imagination for now.
Captain Atom Already Beat Superman in Their Last Fight
Injustice: Gods Among Us #32 by Tom Taylor, Jheremy Raapack, David Lopez
Captain Atom Beats Superman in Injustice Comic Art
The fight may have Superman in the spotlight, but it will also be a chance for Captain Atom to remind DC fans of his own nuclear, near-godlike power. After all, it wassn't too long ago that Captain Atom was called the deadliest weapon in DC's world, so a prime opportunity to prove it is just one added bonus for an event filled with them already.
The fight is more than just a test of his character for Superman, but a test of his actual abilities in a truly all-out brawl. Comic fans will remember that when Superman and Captain Atom both took their gloves off (figuratively) in a fight to the death, Injustice revealed the winner to be Atom, without any room to argue. Will history repeat itself in the main DC Universe, or will this Captain Atom hold back?
Fans will get to see for themselves when DC K.O. Superman vs Captain Atom #1 arrives on December 3 from DC Comics.
