Despite already running for more than a decade, Blue Bloods ended when it was still at the top of the ratings ranking. The cast made it clear that they wanted to continue the show, but the network was in the middle of a lineup refresh, not to mention cost-cutting, leading to its cancelation.
Through the success of Blue Bloods, Donnie Wahlberg's Boston Blue was greenlit. Sean's near-death experience became the inciting incident that motivated Danny to move out of New York and to the Northeast. Joining the pair is the spinoff sequel's version of the Reagan family — the Silvers, whose Lena becomes Danny's new partner.
Boston Blue Is Currently On Break For Thanksgiving
It didn't take CBS a long time to get Boston Blue going. Once Danny decided to move to Boston, he was able to seamlessly integrate himself into an entirely new environment, primarily because of his immediate camaraderie with Lena. Granted that there are still some issues, such as the state of his relationship with Baez, but for the most part, he is back to solving crimes and jailing perpetrators. That's why it's a little disappointing to learn that Boston Blue is not airing a new episode tonight, November 28, 2025.
The change in CBS' Friday night schedule during the 2025-2026 TV season is due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Usually, networks would re-run notable episodes from the show to hopefully catch up with those who haven't watched them. For Boston Blue's 10 PM ET timeslot, however, a rerun of Fire Country season 3 episode is taking over. It's uncertain why the network opted to skip a rerun of the Blue Bloods spinoff, especially since it's a new show that's still building its own audience.
When Boston Blue Returns & What To Expect
Boston Blue's hiatus is not going to last long, however. The CBS freshman is set to make its return during the first week of December, specifically Decmber 5, 2025. After that, it's expected to continue releasing a new episode consistently until it officially enters network TV's usual winter break — something that lasts for a few weeks.
When Boston Blue returns from its Thanksgiving break, it will release episode 7, titled "Baggage Claim." Per the official synopsis released by CBS, the outing will see a role reversal between Lena and Danny, as the former becomes adamant about pursuing justice. Elsewhere, Sarah is faced with a personal issue that will test her character, while Mae deals with a political complication. Finally, Sean and Jonah are in for a more complicated case .
