These Avengers are ready to move on from Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Marvel's premiere superteam is meant to showcase the publisher's A-list heros, but in order to make new A-listers, the old guard need to move on at some point. For one reason or another, these heroes should step back from the Avengers and focus on their solo careers.
The Avengers roster is often in flux, but even when the revolving door of membership is spinning at its fastest, the franchise tends to be built around a core of iconic faces.
However, for some of those perennial members, it might be the hard refresh they need in order to forget about the past and forge a new future for the Marvel Universe.
5 Scarlet Witch
Marvel Fans Want Her To Embrace Her Mutant Heritage
Scarlet Witch isn’t an OG Avenger, but she’s close. After debuting in 1964’s X-Men #4 members of Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, Scarlet Witch and her brother Quicksilver were converted to hero status the next year, joining Earth’s Mightiest heroes in Avengers #16. Her time with the team has been turbulent, to say the least.
Scarlet Witch has had some high highs as an Avengers, but she’s had some infamous low lows, most notably turning on the team in the monumental Avengers: Disassembled arc. That led directly to Wanda decimating Marvel’s mutant population, magically depowering 98% of them. She’s reclaimed her heroic status many times since, but she’s never quite fit with the Avengers the same way again.
Many Marvel fans believe Wanda should be a more active part of the X-Men franchise, even if this meant stepping back from the Avengers. Scarlet Witch is also well-suited for solo adventures. Her latest solo series fell prey to Marvel’s current ten-issue curse, but it wouldn’t be surprising for another volume to start up again soon.
4 Captan America (Sam Wilson)

Sam Wilson is in a tough position as a Marvel hero. Just like in the MCU, the comic book version is the successor to Captain America. Except in Marvel Comics, he coexists in the role alongside the original Cap, Steve Rogers. He shares the spotlight, so to speak. And he deserves to have it to himself for a little bit.
Sam has proven himself in the role time and again, as both a solo hero and an Avenger, but with the latter he risks getting lost in the shuffle. It's understandable, Marvel's top superhero team book has to juggle a lot of characters, to balance so many stories. Still, as Captain America, Sam Wilson needs a sustained push from Marvel.
He's been in the role for over a decade now, and before that, he spent 45 years as the Falcon. Yet his long-heralded ascension to A-lister has been stop-and-start since Marvel elevated him to the Captain America title. He's due for a paradigm-shifting story, or another overhaul, and that might take him away from the Avengers.
3 Black Panther

At the end of Marvel's space operatic Imperial miniseries, T'Challa reclaimed his Wakandan throne; in the Marvel Universe, this makes him the leader of the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda. Yes, Black Panther is one of the most powerful characters in Marvel Comics, not in terms of superpowers, but as a political superpower.
Mean, Black Panther has resources at his disposal that put a terrestrial billionaire like Tony Stark to shame. That might make Black Panther a good alternative benefactor for the Avengers, if Tony were to leave the team. At the same time, it also makes "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" seem small-scale in comparison.
The scope of potential conflicts that T'Challa could face as a solo character is so vast that it makes him feel like an afterthought in his Avengers appearances. With Marvel's four-issue Black Panther: Intergalactic following up on Imperial, it might be time for the hero to take a step back from the Avengers.
2 Iron Man

Iron Man is a founding Avenger. In fact, he's founded multiple Avengers squads. Tony Stark owned Avengers Mansion, the team's most iconic headquarters. He later refitted Manhattan's Stark Tower as Avengers Tower in the wake of the Mansion's destruction. Aside from brief breaks, or periods when Stark was dead in canon, Iron Man has been a stalwart since day one.
Marvel's current Ultimates series, which envisions an alternate continuity version of the team, has encapsulated everything that makes Tony Stark great as a Marvel hero and Avengers leader. As a byproduct, that has thrown into sharp relief how much the mainstream version of Iron Man needs a serious reset to be relevant as a top Marvel Comics hero again.
It would also be a monumental shift for the Avengers, to take Iron Man off the roster for an extended period. He's so integral to the team, just his absence is a challenge for the rest of Earth's Mightiest Heroes to overcome. In 2026, it might be the surprise breakup Marvel needs in order for both sides to get stronger.
1 Vision
2026 Is Primed To Be A Big Year For Vision
Vision joined the team in 1968, meaning he's approaching the 60-year benchmark as a Marvel hero. He's had a complicated history since then, including his tragic relationship with Scarlet Witch. That became integral to MCU lore with their on-screen romance, which took its own heartbreaking turn, leading to the events of WandaVision.
Wanda was subsequently killed off in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, but now Vision is returning for a new Disney+ show, VisionQuest, which is slated for a 2026 release. That means Marvel Comics is going to want to capitalize on renewed buzz surrounding the character. Which means he's due for an equivalent starring role in a new comic series.
A Vision solo series is a natural companion to the TV show. Vision has had solo books before, but not many. He's overdue, and in a position to have his most impactful independent adventure yet. Once more, that might mean a leave of absence from the Avengers if the story is going to be as fully devoted to this underrated hero as it should be.
