James Cameron's latest promise for Avatar: Fire and Ash should be reassuring for all fans, but especially those with burning questions about Kiri. 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water took Cameron's blue-tinted franchise in a host of new directions, with Kiri's presence being the most intriguing of them. Played by Sigourney Weaver and born from Weaver's original Avatar character, Grace, Kiri is something of a miracle yet to be explained.
Given that Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water are two of the most financially successful movies ever released, the prospect of Avatar: Fire and Ash flopping at the box office feels rather remote. And it needs to be, because Avatar has at least two more movies in the pipeline after that. Far too much money and effort has been spent to leave the story unfinished now, but Cameron asserts that Avatar 4 and 5 aren't guaranteed if Fire and Ash doesn't give the franchise its third big hit.
James Cameron Suggests Avatar: Fire And Ash Will Fully Answer Your Kiri Questions
Kiri in Avatar: The Way of Water on top of an amnio tank
With the Avatar franchise set to continue long into the future, it would be justified to fear that The Way of Water's Kiri mystery won't be fully answered for another decade or two. Mercifully, James Cameron indicates that everything will be tied up in Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Speaking on The Town, Cameron discussed the (admittedly outlandish) possibility of being forced to end the franchise early if Avatar: Fire and Ash isn't successful. Cameron hints that the upcoming threequel will largely resolve the current storylines surrounding the Sully family by pointing out how only one "open thread" is left at the end. Going further, Cameron says he'll "write a book" to conclude the narrative for that single thread if need be. That one thread aside, it appears Avatar: Fire and Ash could otherwise function as the end of the franchise.
It's very unlikely that the "one thread" Cameron refers to is Kiri's true identity. Weaver's character was central to Avatar: The Way of Water and is arguably the most tantalizing enigma heading into Fire and Ash, so it would be impossible for the third movie to function as any sort of overall conclusion if it didn't wrap the Kiri mystery up. It's also not the kind of minor detail a book could resolve, meaning the lone thread Cameron mentions must be something less pivotal.
Predicting Avatar: Fire And Ash's One Unresolved Plot Point
Avatar: Fire and Ash's leftover storyline could involve characters introduced in the third movie, and have absolutely nothing to do with the previous two. If the tease does have a basis in the existing franchise, however, it could potentially involve Spider and Quaritch. Avatar: The Way of Water was really just the start of their dynamic, with Spider rejecting his biological father after refusing to let him die.
The ball is now in Quaritch's court to finally do something paternal. We know Avatar: Fire and Ash involves Quaritch working alongside the Fire clan, willingly or otherwise, so he'll continue plaguing the Na'vi as in previous movies. But the stage is set for Stephen Lang's character to find a redemptive moment that maybe gives Spider cause to believe his dad isn't entirely awful. Avatar 4 could then follow the duo as they try to forge a new relationship, navigating the awkward disconnect of their conflicting cultures.
Lang has spoken about filming scenes for Avatar 5, meaning Quaritch is unlikely to die anytime soon. And the Spider storyline feels too early to wrap up after one more film, so it would make complete sense for Avatar: Fire and Ash to leave the door open on that particular thread.
