Elphaba gets an entirely new song for Wicked: For Good, as Cynthia Erivo performs "No Place Like Home." Coming early in the sequel, the first of two original songs serves as an early summation of the Wicked Witch of the West's motivations in the face of so much hatred and lies.
Taking its title directly from Dorothy's iconic line in The Wizard of Oz, Elphaba's solo takes place on the yellow brick road after she discovers a group of animals in the midst of escaping to the place beyond Oz. Surrounded by the animals she's sworn to help, including a reunion with Dulcibear, the green-skinned witch breaks into a new Wicked: For Good song about why she's fighting to save Oz.
The lyrics to "No Place Like Home" are worth knowing to gain a greater understanding of Elphaba's new song, as well as make it easier to sing along to the released Wicked: For Good soundtrack.
No Place Like Home's Lyrics
Elphaba singing No Place Like Home in Wicked: For Good
Written by Stephen Schwartz, "No Place Like Home" is a solo for Elphaba, as she's the only one who sings, with her and Dulcibear each having brief speaking parts in the movie that are removed from the soundtrack. The lyrics to it are below:
[ELPHABA]
Why do I love this place
That's never loved me
A place that seems to be devolving
And even wanting to
But Oz is more than just a place
It's a promise, an idea
And I want to help make it come true
Why should a land have so much meaning
When dark times befall it?
It's only land, made of dirt and rock and loam
It's just a place that's familiar
And home's just what we call it
But there's no place like home
Don't we all know
There's no place like home?
When you feel you can't fight anymore
Just tell yourself
There's no place like home
When you feel it's not worth fighting for
Compel yourself because
Because there's no place like home
When you want to leave
Discouraged and resigned
That's what they want you to do
But think how you'll grieve
For all you'll leave behind
Oz belongs to you too
Those who would take it from you
Spout a lie to sell yourself
You go their way or go
It's them who you'll be defeating
If we keep on repeating
There's no place like home
There's no place like home
There's no place like home
If we just keep fighting for it
We will win back and restore it
There's no place like home
The Meaning Of No Place Like Home
Elphaba holding her broom posing in front of Dorothy's house in Wicked: For Good
On the surface, "No Place Like Home" is Elphaba's proclamation about why Oz is worth fighting for. She attempts to rally the support of animals through a message of hope and perseverance. This land might not be welcoming to the witch or her animal friends anymore, but it is still the place they've always called home.
Elphaba uses the song to explain that they can't let Oz continue devolving into something it shouldn't be. The land needs saving, and she wants to help, even if no one understands her during that process. She's willing to stand up against the oppressive forces controlling her home for a better tomorrow.
Erivo has spoken about the meaning of her song, aligning with this interpretation. She explained that this is where the next chapter in Elphaba's story really begins, as she discovers the true purpose driving her actions.
She has to question why she wants to continue to save Oz, or save the animals in it, even though this place doesn’t necessarily want her. It is a discovery as to why she can continue. That is where the story gets started for her.
This song and the theme of finding and fighting for your home are key to the story. The whole movie really revolves around Elphaba and Glinda coming to terms with where they belong and their place in Oz. This helps shape the decisions they make all the way up to Wicked: For Good's ending.
So, while "No Place Like Home" comes fairly early on in the movie, it's an instrumental addition to Wicked: For Good and another great showcase of Erivo's talents.
