Happy Friday, all! Today, we at Collider are thrilled to be back with Cooper Raiff for another week of scene dissection for his newest series, Hal & Harper. Along with creating the Mubi production, Raiff also penned it and is one of its stars, giving him a multifaceted view into each of the episodes and the, at times, difficult and strained relationships between the family at the center of the story. This time around, in an exclusive behind-the-scenes look, Raiff will be walking us through Episodes 6 and 7 and unraveling several of his favorite moments that feature the all-star cast, which, along with him, includes Lili Reinhart (Riverdale) and Mark Ruffalo (Now You See Me).
As those who have been tuning in will already know, much of Hal & Harper focuses on the titular characters, a pair of siblings who never quite broke their codependent ties. But, as the story has progressed, Ruffalo’s portrayal of the pair’s father has shed some light on why and how they turned into the humans they’ve become. In Episode 6, Raiff explains, audiences will fully dig into the world of Dad (Ruffalo), specifically in the years following his wife’s passing, when he began going on dates. Introducing his favorite moment in the episode, Raiff points to an interaction between Dad and one of his dates, which ends when Dad sabotages the blossoming connection and instead takes comfort in rushing home to his kids with Nerf guns in hand.
Moving on to Episode 7, the storyline returns from the past to the present day as Raiff walks us through the opening sequence, which sees Harper (Reinhart) at the front door of Audrey's (Addison Timlin, Californication) home. Walking viewers through the incredibly moving and heartbreaking scene, Raiff breaks down the pair’s conversation as Audrey confides in her friend about what it’s like to struggle with co-parenting and sharing custody. Although both women are coming from completely different experiences and backgrounds, their shared sense of loss helps them come together in what unravels itself to be one of the most touching sequences in the coming-of-age drama.
Who Else Stars in ‘Hal & Harper’?
In addition to the leading trio of family members, the ensemble cast behind one of the year’s most talked about indie series includes Betty Gilpin (American Primeval), Alyah Chanelle Scott (The Sex Lives of College Girls), Havana Rose Liu (No Exit), Christopher Meyer (Wayward Pines), Michelle Pascarella (NCIS), Ayla Manji (Shifting Gears), Daphne Abinante (The Loud House) and more.
