Previous Page Next PageThe race for Christmas number one was thrown wide open on Friday morning when a TV behemoth launched her brand-new Christmas single.
Beloved children’s cartoon character Peppa Pig – who has threatened to capture the festive top spot before – announced her intentions on Good Morning Britain.
Hosts Kate Garraway and Rob Rinder interrupted their schedule by alerting viewers to the fact that there was ‘news from Peppaland’ of an urgent nature.
Richard Arnold, GMB’s Entertainment Editor, hinted at the big news: ‘Yes, Peppa Pig has woken us up early on Good Morning Britain, but what could the nation’s favourite pig be up to?’
Peppa then teased the news herself via voiceover, saying: ‘Good morning, Britain. I’m Peppa Pig, and I’ve got something very special and festive coming up for you on the show today.
‘Stay tuned for a Christmas classic,’ she finished, before Richard revealed that Peppa plans to release a new version of Wham’s 1984 hit Last Christmas.

The song has been recorded to celebrate the first Christmas of Peppa’s new baby sister, Evie, who was born in May of this year during Peppa Pig’s ninth season.
A clip of the song then revealed that George Michael’s lyrics have been altered, with Peppa presumably wanting to improve her chances of a number one on her own terms.
‘Last Christmas was great from the start, and the very best day in every way / This year, now Evie is here, it’s gonna be extra special.’

By releasing the song, Peppa has declared her intentions to battle the Caregivers Choir for number one this Christmas, who are releasing a cover of Robbie Williams’ 90s hit Angels.
Sensing the tension that will no doubt define the December chart tussle, Rob Rinder compared it to the box office battle between Barbie and Oppenheimer in 2023.
Kate attempted to lighten the mood by reminding Rob and Richard that it would be a ‘joyous’ and fair contest, and that ‘lots of pink’ would surely be involved.
However, Kate’s reassurance fell on deaf ears, as Rob and Richard no doubt remembered the events of six years ago, when Peppa threatened to ‘steal’ the 2019 top spot on December 25.

At that time, Peppa released an original number, Bing Bong Christmas, a re-working of Bing Bong Zoo, which had appeared on her debut album My First Album.
She told Metro at the time: ‘I see other people who are in for it, like Robbie Williams. I love Robbie Williams, but it’s going to be a bit awkward when I steal Christmas number one from him.’

Peppa didn’t stop there: ‘And all the John Lewis adverts. I mean, it’s absolutely insane. We worked really, really hard with the entire Peppa album, but especially with the Bing Bong Christmas.’
Bing Bong Christmas failed to chart, presumably because Peppa thankfully had a change of heart and decided to allow LadBaby’s I Love Sausage Rolls a clear path to the top.
But it seems, six years on, and with LadBaby having stepped away from doing Christmas songs, Peppa is ready to take the challenge on once more.
