Warning! This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Stranger Things season 5, episode 4.
Stranger Things season 5 has unveiled a new weakness for Eleven that she has taken to calling her kryptonite, but how exactly does it work? As Eleven and her friends in The Party prepare to take down the ultimate monster from the Upside Down, Vecna, they encounter a series of roadblocks.
After the tense finale of Stranger Things season 4, the military has moved in to Hawkins and taken control of the situation. But the military has also been hunting Eleven due to her mysterious powers and the damage that she could cause to their operation. And in order to take her down, they've brought some new, powerful tools.
The Military Has Kryptonite Against Eleven & Her Powers

Eleven's powers are connected to the Upside Down, and the military has set up a base camp inside the Upside Down in order to explore the area and understand the potential threats. While they are still seeking a lot of answers, they have managed to harness an unusual power source to fight Eleven and others like her.
This weapon appears to be a sort of sonic blast that they emit from small satellites equipped on top of their trucks. And when switched on, the machines emit a signal that can't be heard by ordinary people like Hopper, but are absolutely crippling to people like Eleven.
What Happens To Eleven When Her Kryptonite Is Used

When Eleven is caught within the range of these machines, she appears to experience incredible pain, and it has even led to her nose bleeding. This suggests that the signal might be overloading her psychic powers and causing Eleven to lose control.
However, it wasn't expressly outlined how these machines work, so there could be more to them that is yet to be revealed in the rest of the final season.
Is Eleven's Kryptonite Actually Kali?

When Eleven began interrogating one of the soldiers, she tried to get answers about the lab, their weapons, and the new woman in charge, K. As Eleven dug into the soldier's mind, she was able to see a door that appeared to be connected to her so-called kryptonite, which made her think the army had captured Vecna.
However, in Stranger Things season 5, episode 4, Eleven learns that Vecna was not the person imprisoned in that room; it was Kali, aka experiment number Eight. In season 2, Eleven met Kali, and they became close as they bonded over the trauma they both experienced as children in the lab.
It is possible that Kali is the source of Eleven's kryptonite in Stranger Things, as she was hooked up to machines, and they could have been transmitting a signal from her mind. But now that they've had time to study it, it's possible that K and her goons could replicate the signal and use it against both Eleven and Kali throughout the rest of Stranger Things season 5.
