Stephen A. Smith calls Drake Maye a liar for Cam Newton comment

Former North Carolina Tar Heels' quarterback Drake Maye has his New England Patriots team at 9-2 overall entering Week 12 and he's playing at an MVP level. Maye has taken a significant jump in year two as the Patriots are in the conversation for the top spot in the AFC.

But not everyone is a believer in Maye or the Patriots.

On ESPN's "First Take", former NFL quarterback Cam Newton mentioned that New England's success might be "fools gold" because of the last-place schedule they have. Newton did say Maye was playing well but also credited Josh McDaniels as a reason for the success.

Maye was asked about Newton, a quarterback he said he admires, during his weekly hit on WEEI. He responded with an honest answer, saying, "I don’t even know what show [Newton is] on." He went more in depth as well.

"I think they get paid to make remarks and make certain comments. So, I just worry about what people in our organization think, and worry about we think and what my teammates think. People are going to have different opinions. I’m just going out there on Sunday and worrying about ourselves.”

That apparently didn't sit well with Stephen A. Smith who is a prominent figure on "First Take". Smith responded on Thursday, calling Maye a liar.

“He’s also a liar,” Smith said. “‘Pardon The Interruption’ is the No. 1 show on ESPN spanning 20-plus decades. ‘First Take’ is the No. 1 morning show 13 years and counting — April will be 14 years. Don’t tell me you an athlete and you don’t know that. Don’t tell me you an athlete and you don’t know that Cam Newton is on this show. You lying.”

Maye is an athlete playing at the highest level. His focus each and every day is practicing and working to get better, so I highly doubt he pays attention to talking heads. That's probably the case for the majority of the athletes at that level.

For Maye, he just needs to continue doing what he does and he will be fine.
