Cinematic adaptations of video games, novels, and other IP are nothing new, with many proving to be the most popular movies and shows of recent years. But little did anyone expect, pre-2003, that one of the greatest movies of the decade would be an adaptation of a theme park attraction. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, sailed to both box office and critical glory when it was first released over two decades ago, and, even today, it still proves just as popular.
At the time of writing, The Curse of the Black Pearl is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Disney+. This streaming success will no doubt be boosted by discourse surrounding a return to the franchise, with reports suggesting Johnny Depp is being eyed to reprise his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow. In addition to being nominated for an impressive five Academy Awards, including a nod for Depp's aforementioned charismatic lead turn, The Curse of the Black Pearl became an instant hit with critics, boasting a strong, "certified fresh" 79% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The critics' consensus reads, "May leave you exhausted like the theme park ride that inspired it; however, you'll have a good time when it's over." The synopsis for the movie reads:
"Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) arrives at Port Royal in the Caribbean without a ship or crew. His timing is inopportune, however, because later that evening the town is besieged by a pirate ship. The pirates kidnap the governor's daughter, Elizabeth (Keira Knightley), who's in possession of a valuable coin that is linked to a curse that has transformed the pirates into the undead. A gallant blacksmith (Orlando Bloom) in love with Elizabeth allies with Sparrow in pursuit of the pirates."
Could the Pirates Be Getting Back Together?
With producer Bruckheimer having revealed that a sixth film in Disney’s blockbuster franchise is in development, what are the chances that the band of sea-sailing swashbucklers could all get back together? As already mentioned, Depp is seemingly set to return, but what about the franchise's other two biggest names, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley? The woman behind Elizabeth Swan frustratingly admitted that "there haven't been any conversations" in a previous interview, but, more positively, Bloom suggested later that "maybe there’s a world where we get the band back together." Who knows what the future holds for this franchise?
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is currently available to stream on Disney+. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
