The Toronto Blue Jays were the story of the Major League Baseball hot stove on Wednesday, when news broke in the evening of their reported seven-year, $210 million agreement with right-handed pitcher Dylan Cease.
But while the Cease signing still hadn't been made official as of Thursday afternoon, another 30-year-old right-handed pitcher with significantly less name recognition officially joined the Blue Jays organization on Wednesday.
According to the official MLB transactions log, the Blue Jays inked eight-year minor-leaguer Tanner Andrews to a minor-league deal on Wednesday. Andrews, who spent much of the last season in the Minnesota Twins organization after signing a contract in June, was assigned to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons on Thursday.
...Andrews, a 10th-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft for the Miami Marlins, has pitched in three organizations: the Marlins, Twins, and San Francisco Giants. In 135 minor-league appearances, he owns a 19-17 record, 4.50 ERA, 321 strikeouts, and 120 walks in 309 2/3 innings of work.
Andrews spent the prior two seasons before this one in the Pacific Coast League, a notorious offensive haven, and got knocked around so much that he was likely hindered in finding a contract last offseason. But he rebounded with the Twins' Double-A affiliate this season, pitching to a 3.78 ERA in 16 2/3 innings.
Do the Blue Jays expect Andrews to contribute at the major league level this season? Probably not, but the beauty of spring training is that anyone can show out and earn themselves either a roster spot early in the season (unlikely in Andrews' case) or consideration for later in the year if the good results continue at Triple-A.
Andrews, meanwhile, is just hoping this arduous minor-league journey eventually pays off in a major league debut.
