Heading into Week 13 of the NFL regular season, the Pittsburgh Steelers are No. 11 in the league in scoring but only No. 27 in yards on offense. This has caused a great deal of criticism of Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and his inability to scheme this offense to be successful.

Smith addressed the media on Thanksgiving and Smith made it clear the coaches are trying to get players in positions to win and how important it is to be playing their best football late in the season.

“We try like hell every week to problem-solve that to put our guys in good situations,” Smith said. “Sometimes you feel like you have a great call and protection breaks down, the ball gets tipped. Those are things we are constantly working on, and that’s the name of the game. You get into these moments and we need to be playing our best football down the stretch.”

Pittsburgh voluntarily put itself into a tough spot this offseason when it chose to go into the year with only one viable wide receiver. This means Smith is scheming an offense where the bulk of the receiving opportunities will fall to the tight end and running backs. This has created a situation where wide receiver DK Metcalf has struggled with opportunities and explosive plays have been limited.
