Diablo and Dark Souls have both spawned countless imitators, but interesting combinations of both aren't as common. If you want to shell out for a game in early access, there's always No Rest for the Wicked. If you don't, however, you might want to check out an upcoming game with a lower barrier to entry.
Gods, Death & Reapers, set for release in 2026, blends Diablo inspirations with an interesting mix of genres and styles. Featuring a gameplay loop inspired by extraction shooters and options for single-player, co-op, and PvPvE, there's a lot that could be compelling here. The Steam page for Gods, Death & Reapers offers the option to request playtest access, allowing interested parties to participate in future alpha tests at no cost.
Gods, Death & Reapers Playtest Requests Are Open
No Harm In Signing Up
There might be a bit of a wait for the next Gods, Death & Reapers playtest, as Closed Alpha 4 just wrapped up on November 26. Based on the pace of previous Closed Alpha tests, it doesn't seem likely that Closed Alpha 5 will arrive until 2026.
Developer WOLCEN Studio promises to "continue to invite more Reapers as we progress" in future playtests. Beyond the playtests, Gods, Death & Reapers is currently set for release at some point during 2026.
There Are Strong Dark Souls Vibes Here
A Promising Atmosphere
Gods, Death & Reapers doesn't borrow most of its core mechanics from Dark Souls, but its flavor of dark fantasy looks closer to the FromSoft style than to Diablo. The game is "set in an afterlife where mythology is real and the gods are dead," tasking players with restoring "balance to the shattered realms." If dead gods, shattered realms, and an uphill battle to restore balance don't sound like Hidetaka Miyazaki's type of fantasy, I don't know what does.
That being said, the compelling atmosphere of Gods, Death & Reapers doesn't guarantee an experience as great as Dark Souls. WOLCEN Studio's previous game, Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem, ceased development before fans felt like it was finished, shutting down the multiplayer servers and leaving much of the game's potential untapped. The same could very well happen for Gods, Death & Reapers, although it's far too early to make a call.
Either way, the eclectic mix of Gods, Death & Reapers is worth keeping an eye on. The extraction-based ARPG genre isn't exactly crowded, so fans of Diablo, Dark Souls, or even ARC Raiders might find a unique experience here once the next alpha playtest rolls around.
