Sporting an unblemished record, the Danish club has a slim two-point cushion atop the Europa League table and seems poised to sail into the knockout rounds. Roma, meanwhile, is mired in 18th place after dropping two of their first four EL matches and faces the prospect of playing in the Knockout Round Playoffs—a fate the club can ill afford to face this winter when injuries and absences are sure to pile up.
Given that Roma currently holds a two-point lead at the top of the Serie A standings, we can quibble about the importance of the Europa League, but the club isn’t in a position to turn down any route back to the Champions League. In that light, expect Gasperini to take this match seriously because a win could make the path toward EL success much easier.
