Zootopia is seeing an inevitable but still impressive resurgence on streaming amid the sequel's theatrical release. The 2016 animated Disney flick maintains a 98% critics' approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, illustrating the reception that led to it winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, and grossed more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office close to 10 years ago.

Zootopia 2, co-directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, was released theatrically on November 26. The sequel sees the return of Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman as rabbit Judy Hopps and fox Nick Wilde, respectively. The two are now struggling to find an effective professional dynamic as part of Zootopia's police force, while they investigate a new case.

Zootopia 2 debuted with a similar Rotten Tomatoes score, making for a strong follow-up. ScreenRant's Molly Freeman even calls it a "near-perfect sequel," and it will likely be considered for many awards (though probably losing to KPop Demon Hunters across the board). However, fans are still celebrating Zootopia's return by revisiting its predecessor in droves.

Per FlixPatrol, Zootopia is currently the No. 1 movie on Disney+ in the world, on the streamer's Top 10 in the World Today chart (it is also at No. 1 in the United States). Thus, it is charting above other presently popular titles on the platform, including Freakier Friday, The Fantastic 4: First Steps, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and the first three Toy Story movies.

Zootopia's cast also includes Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, Nate Torrence, Bonnie Hunt, J.K. Simmons, Octavia Spencer, Shakira, Alan Tudyk, and Josh Dallas. The movie's comedy is driven by many delightful puns and Easter eggs — including Tudyk riffing on his Frozen role and Ginnifer Goodwin's husband (Dallas) appearing in a cameo role — amid a meaningful storyline about discrimination.

Zootopia 2 is also ending Disney's streak of sequels that fail to measure up to their predecessors, as well as making up for some box office disappointments this year. Namely, Disney and Pixar's original animation has been floundering in recent years, with the relatively well-reviewed feature of Elio still being a disastrous flop. Zootopia 2, however, has the established IP advantage.

Zootopia was once a very successful original film in the pre-pandemic era, and the worthy sequel is reigniting interest in it. While viewers check out Zootopia again, Zootopia 2 also brings in the new cast of Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan, plus Fortune Feimster, Andy Samberg, Michael J. Fox, Stephanie Beatriz​​​​​​​, Macaulay Culkin​​​​​​​, John Leguizamo, and more, doubling down on one of the first movie's funnest elements.
