One day after Boston traded for 36-year-old, 13-year veteran righty Sonny Gray in a move that immediately polarized Red Sox fans, a new trade candidate, one whose name has not surfaced much in trade rumors this offseason, emerged — as a prominent Red Sox podcast host appeared to suggest that the team trade for the 32-year-old pitcher.

"Sleeper name: Tyler Glasnow," one unnamed MLB executive told ESPN.con for a free agent roundup published on Wednesday. "Feels like the Dodgers can go to (Shohei) Ohtani, (Yoshinobu) Yamamoto, (Blake) Snell, (Roki) Sasaki, (Emmet) Sheehan and others and use Glasnow on the trade market to cover up holes."

Tyler Glasnow...

Glasnow was just traded from the Tampa Bay Rays to the Los Angeles Dodgers two years ago, and prior to this season, the Dodgers granted him a five-year, $136.5 million contract extension. He pitched in his second World Series for the Dodgers this year, getting touched up for three earned runs in eight innings over three games.

Glasnow also pitched in the 2020 World Series for Tampa Bay, but that one did not go as well. The right-hander coughed up 10 earned runs in 9 1/3 innings against the Dodgers, who eventually won that World Series.

"New surprising potential trade candidate: Tyler Glasnow," wrote Matthew Crory of the "Pesky Report" podcast. "He is owed $65M over the next two seasons with a club option of $30M for ‘28 or If 2028 club option is declined, it converts to a $21,562,500 player option."

If the Red Sox were to trade for Glasnow, they would likely need to receive cash to cover part of his contract, as they did with Gray. The Cardinals sent $20 million to the Red Sox to help defray the costs of Gray's $35 million salary for 2026. The Red Sox also renovated Gray's salary down to $31 million, taking that $5 million savings and applying it to his contract buyout, raising that price to $10 million from $5 million.

The urgency of doing the same with Glasnow would be even more clear, because the 2011 Pittsburgh Pirates fifth-round draft pick has been plagued by injuries throughout his career.

In fact, in 10 seasons, Glasnow has topped 100 inning pitched only three times, including a career-high 134 innings in 2024. But even that season ended prematurely when Glasnow went on the injured list with elbow tendonitis in August, never returning even as Los Angeles made its ultimately successful World Series run.

While Glasnow may make an intriguing name to throw in the trade mix as the Red Sox continue to upgrade their pitching staff, the money and his inability to stay on the mound for a full season probably makes Glasnow a long shot at best to end uo at Fenway Park,
