The Detroit Tigers need to do a few things during the offseason, but if one of them is certain, it's to stop adding older players who have dealt with a lot of injuries throughout their careers.

The Tigers have an opportunity to continue to compete with the best of them in baseball. Scott Harris needs to put the Tigers in the best position to start winning games at the highest level.

With multiple starters out there for them to pursue, hopefully making a 1–2 punch with Tarik Skubal and another elite arm, someone like Zac Gallen, the Arizona Diamondbacks' free agent, could make a lot of sense.

Will Laws of Sports Illustrated seems to believe the same thing, predicting him to join Detroit this winter.

“Gallen has made 126 starts over the past four seasons and has logged the third-most innings in baseball during that span, so durability is clearly among his strongest traits. Whether or not all that mileage has begun to wear him down is another issue. He posted career worsts in ERA (4.58), FIP (4.50) and strikeout rate (21.5%) in 2025, a swift decline after back-to-back top-10 Cy Young Award finishes in ‘22 and ‘23. Given his track record, it wouldn’t be a shock if Gallen opted for a short-term deal to regain some of his lost value in search of a bigger payday this time next year,” he wrote.

Gallen might not be the perfect arm in some sense due to a few of his numbers, but the reality is, the right-hander has been able to stay on the mound over recent years.

In three of the past four years, he's been one of the more consistent arms in the game, throwing in at least 184.0 innings.
