The New York Yankees will have some tough decisions to make with their bullpen, as Luke Weaver and Devin Williams, two guys who closed games for them over the past two seasons, are both free agents.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWilliams was acquired in a deal with the Milwaukee Brewers during the offseason a year ago, and Weaver had really improved his stuff over the past few campaigns in New York.
Searching for ways for the Yankees to improve that, Will Laws of Sports Illustrated recently predicted that Robert Suarez, the San Diego Padres free agent, would take a deal in New York.
“Suarez turned in his second dominant season in a row as the Padres’ closer, posting a sub-3.00 ERA and FIP to go along with 40 saves in 70 appearances. He throws hard, and while it’s possible teams are concerned about him maintaining that velocity into his late 30s, Suarez has produced enough that he’ll be among the most sought-after closers on the market after Diaz,” he wrote.
On the surface, someone like Williams has better stuff than Suarez, although he obviously wasn't great last year in terms of just a basic ERA.

Suarez led the National League with 40 saves, so he certainly wouldn't be a bad option, but it might not be the worst idea for the Yankees to give Williams another look and hope that he turns back the clock to what he was just a year and a half ago.
