"Brian is a huge asset to our school and athletic family, and we are excited about this new opportunity for him," Red River athletic director Tyler Nelson said in a release. "His wealth of knowledge on the sport, his ability to connect with athletes and his passion for success made him the perfect fit for our program."

Gutierrez is already well connected with the Grand Forks soccer community. He is the owner of CrossFit Tundra and runs the Grand Forks Sports Academy,

which offers indoor training for local youth soccer players.

over the summer.

Heydt led the program for seven years. The Roughriders made the North Dakota Class A state tournament in 2024 for the first time in 10 years and finished third at state in 2025.

Red River lost seven seniors to graduation this offseason, but there is a host of talented underclassmen coming back.

Gutierrez was on the Roughrider boys' coaching staff when they made a run to the state championship this season, upsetting top-seeded Bismarck Legacy and second-seeded West Fargo Sheyenne in the process.
