Irish mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran and former Bellator title challenger, Sinead Kavanagh, was reportedly arrested in Spain this week after allegedly assaulting two Civil Guard officers during a confrontation aboard a Ryanair flight scheduled to depart from Gran Canaria to Dublin.

According to multiple Spanish outlets, including Atlantico Hoy and Canarias 7, the incident occurred Monday evening (Nov. 24) when the flight crew requested police assistance for what they described as “violent behavior” from Kavanagh and another female passenger. The pilot had reportedly decided the pair would not be permitted to fly, prompting officers to board the aircraft to remove them.

A Civil Guard spokesperson told The Sun that the officers intended to identify the women and escort them off the plane; however, the situation escalated when Kavanagh allegedly resisted.

Per multiple reports, the 39-year-old fighter allegedly “repeatedly struck” two police officers while grappling with them in the aircraft aisle. One officer was allegedly placed on medical leave because of injuries sustained during the altercation.

Video recorded by another passenger and obtained by Atlantico Hoy appears to show Kavanagh wrestling with officers as a woman in the background shouts, “Don’t do this! Please!”

Kavanagh was ultimately detained and held in an airport holding cell before appearing in court Tuesday (Nov. 25) in Telde, Spain. She was released on bail and remains under investigation for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. Authorities have not disclosed whether the second woman involved will face charges or travel restrictions, per People.com.

Kavanagh (9-7) was last in action at Bellator Champions Series: Dublin in June 2024, getting submitted by Arlene Blencowe in the second round. The Irish fighter went 6-7 in Bellator, with her peak being a Featherweight title fight against Cris Cyborg, but was ultimately knocked out in less than two minutes (watch highlights).

Neither Kavanagh nor her management team has issued a public statement on the arrest.
