It was always going to happen: PlayStation Plus, as we currently know it, is coming to an end in just a few months, and gamers are being urged to prepare for the change before it comes.
One of the most common complaints gamers have leveled against PlayStation during the PS5 era is that the PS4 has remained too much of a focus. This hasn't been bad news for everyone, of course, especially those who have yet to upgrade to PS5.
PlayStation Plus Is Making A Huge Change Come January 2026
It might be time to upgrade

Sadly, PlayStation 4 gamers are going to have to make the upgrade they've been putting it off sooner rather than later. Starting January 2026, PlayStation Plus Essential is going to phase out PS4 games, focusing on PS5 titles moving forward.
PlayStation explained:
“As many of our players are currently playing on PS5 and have shifted toward redeeming and accessing PS5 titles from the Monthly Games and Game Catalogue benefit, PlayStation Plus is also evolving with this trend and will focus on offering PS5 titles through the Monthly Games and Game Catalogue benefit starting January 2026."
This has, somewhat predictably, proved to be a divisive move. Most PlayStation Plus gamers with a PlayStation 4 are being urged to upgrade to the more expensive PlayStation Plus Extra tier, which will still include games from the previous console each month. You might not need to do that just yet, however...
There's A Handy Trick You Should Know About
You Don't Need A PS5... Yet
As it turns out, you can easily claim PlayStation Plus Essential PS5 free games without a PS5 console. So if you're still saving up for that PlayStation 5 and don't expect to have one until November 2026, when GTA 6 releases, you can stay on PlayStation Plus Essential with your PS4 and build up a nice library of free PS5 games to play. You know, provided you remember to add them to your library each month and remain a paid-up subscriber to the Essential tier.
As pointed out over on Reddit, it's possible for PlayStation 4 gamers to add free PlayStation 5 PS Plus games to their library through the PlayStation App, or through your account on the PlayStation Store website via any mobile device or computer.
It's a simple enough trick, but judging by the comments over on Reddit there are an alarming number of PS4 gamers who haven't been doing this because it never occurred to them. If you fall into that camp and want to continue getting the most out of PlayStation Plus, heed this advice before January arrives.
