STILLWATER — The Oklahoma State athletic department could potentially owe more than $26 million in buyout payments as a result of the football coaching change.
OSU must pay a $2.3 million buyout to North Texas as a result of the Eric Morris hiring Tuesday, according to a report from the Denton Record-Chronicle.

OSU is also paying the remainder of fired defensive coordinator Todd Grantham’s contract, which had a total of roughly $3.15 million remaining.
And assuming none of the current assistant coaches are retained by Morris, OSU must pay their individual buyouts, which total $5.75 million.
Should OSU have to pay the full total, it would equal $26.2 million, all of which comes from athletic department funds, with none from university or state funds. Additionally, the Gundy, Grantham and assistant coach buyouts can be reduced if any of them get another coaching job prior to the expiration of the contract.
