A gunman opened fire at people near Farragut Metro station just a block away from the White House on Wednesday.
A suspect who was in custody was also shot and has injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Horrific images appear to show a National Guard soldier bleeding on the floor surrounded by broken glass from a bus shelter.
Governor Patrick Morrisey posted on X: ‘It is with great sorrow that we can confirm both members of the West Virginia National Guard who were shot earlier today in Washington, DC have passed away from their injuries.
‘These brave West Virginians lost their lives in the service of their country. We are in ongoing contact with federal officials as the investigation continues.
‘Our entire state grieves with their families, their loved ones, and the Guard community. West Virginia will never forget their service or their sacrifice, and we will demand full accountability for this horrific act.’A video of the aftermath of the shooting appears to show soldiers and Secret Service piling on a suspect as they struggle to detain him.
Other guards appeared emotional after their fellow soldiers were taken to hospital.

DC Police posted on X: ‘The scene is secured. One suspect is in custody,’ just 20 minutes after reporting the gunfire.
Armed police and helicopters were seen surrounding the station.
President Donald Trump was at his West Palm Beach golf course when the shooting took place.
Trump, who is in Florida celebrating Thanksgiving, warned in a statement on social media that the ‘animal’ who shot the guardsmen ‘will pay a very steep price.’
‘God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People,’ Trump wrote on Truth Social.

NTD reporter Mari Otsu posted on X: ‘National Guard shot near the White House at a little before 2:15pm.
‘I was in an Uber to work, with my cameraman, and heard multiple shots fired as we passed Farragut West.
‘A member of the National Guard fell while others rushed onto the scene. Area still on lockdown and Secret Service being deployed.’
