Over the past few weeks, former Tennessee Titans general manager Ran Carthon has been making the rounds on podcasts and social media, giving some insight into his time in charge of the Titans.

After discussing his relationship with former head coach Mike Vrabel last week, Carthon joined Dov Kleiman this week to discuss his first draft with the Titans in 2023 and what his dream scenario would have been if he could have pulled it off. While it makes for great conversation years after the fact, that’s all it is: conversation.

Carthon sat at the helm of two drafts with the Titans, and his results were mixed. Yes, Tennessee grabbed some starters and contributors in those classes, but it also missed in some critical areas and has already moved on from many of its selections.

“My dream scenario was to be able to trade back and, in some scenario, pick up an additional second-round pick and then package the two second-round picks and trade back into the bottom of the first to take Jahmyr Gibbs,” Carthon said. “Because I thought just adding a player with that type of explosiveness makes you instantly explosive on offense, and you talk about a one-two punch of Jahmyr Gibbs and Derrick Henry that would have been a problem.”

Looking back, that idea would have been exciting, but as the draft proved, it would have been an absolute disaster. To pull off a trade like that, the initial trade likely would have had to take place before the draft to obtain the extra second-rounder, and if it were on draft day, they would never have known that the Detroit Lions would use the No. 12 pick on Gibbs.

As nice as that dream scenario sounds, it would never have happened, and the Titans would be without their best offensive lineman, Peter Skoronski, who was selected one pick ahead of Gibbs in the 2023 NFL draft.

While it's impossible to say whether or not external conversations occurred, this is one hypothetical move that Titans fans should be happy fell through.
