Former league head coaches have taken high-profile college football gigs in recent years. Former Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien took over at Boston College in 2024. Bill Belichick accepted the opening at North Carolina for 2025.

Another former league coach has been connected to a Group of 5 job that is getting plenty of buzz this week. Former Florida head coach Billy Napier was immediately tied to North Texas after it was reported that Eric Morris is set to take over at Oklahoma State.

Morris plans to finish the season at UNT. The Mean Green are 10-1 before hosting Temple on Friday.

With a win, North Texas can qualify to play in the American Conference championship with an opportunity to prove to the College Football Playoff selection committee that it deserves to be in the final bracket.

With UNT having a clear path to the CFP, former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has popped up as a possibility for the Mean Green in 2026. Brian Davis, a contributor for the Houston Chronicle, suggested Garrett was a potential target for UNT.

"Jim Mora to Colorado State. Jason Garrett to North Texas?" Davis posted on X. "If college coaching is now just like the pros (NIL, portal, etc.), find a school that's in a great location with low expectations and just go coach ball."

Garrett, 59, went 85-67 during his 10 seasons with the Cowboys. Following the 2020 season, Dallas owner Jerry Jones announced the team would not renew Garrett's contract.

Garrett was with the New York Giants for two seasons as the offensive coordinator before he was fired in November of 2021.

Garrett was reported to be a candidate for the Duke coaching job in 2021. However, the Blue Devils hired Mike Elko.

Garrett would be an intriguing hire and a big name to replace Morris at North Texas. Despite being linked to college programs, all of his coaching experience is at the NFL level.
