New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman knows he has to add to the infield this winter. While Ryan McMahon provided solid defense over at third base, he did not provide a strong enough bat for a team of the Yankees' caliber.
Now, the Bronx Bombers are back to the drawing board as they hope the answer can be found this offseason to fill the infield hole. They do have a few options in play as they could acquire a third baseman and keep Jazz Chisholm at second, or they could acquire a second baseman and slide Chisholm back over to third.
New York has plenty of options to choose from in free agency and on the trade market, and MLB insider Mark Feinsand is reporting the Yankees have shown interest in St. Louis Cardinals infielder Brendan Donovan.
..."The Cardinals figure to be the most active team on the trade market this winter, with Donovan, Nolan Arenado (more on him shortly) and Sonny Gray all prime candidates to be dealt," Feinsand wrote for MLB.com. "The Astros, Yankees and Guardians are among the teams believed to have interest in the 28-year-old, giving the Cardinals multiple options to pursue. ... With two years of club control remaining and a healthy arbitration raise set for this winter, Donovan is one of the more likely trade candidates of the offseason. The versatile infielder/outfielder can play all over the field, a quality that figures to be appealing to a number of potential suitors."
Donovan won a Gold Glove in 2022 with the Cardinals and made it to the All-Star game this year with the team. Through 460 at-bats this season, he hit .287 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI. Defensively, Donovan posted a -2 DRS and 2 OAA at his primary position of second base.
Spotrac shows Donovan is set to make just under $6 million this season for the Cardinals or whichever team adds him this winter. It would be a reasonable price to pay for a player who is under team control through 2027.
If the Yankees can add Donovan to the infield and slide Chisholm to third base, the infield is much stronger going into next season than it was at any point this year. Even though Chisholm prefers to play second base, Cashman may not give him much of a choice.
