Matthew Stafford was a staple of Thanksgiving during his 12 years with the Detroit Lions, playing every year on Turkey Day – as long as he was healthy enough to suit up. Unfortunately for he and the Lions, those games didn’t always end with a win.

Joe Burrow sure remembers that, sending Stafford a backhanded compliment during his press conference this week when discussing what he remembers about Thanksgiving as a kid.

“I think just like a lot of kids, you grow up going through Thanksgiving, you have your meals with your family and then you go and sit on the couch,” he said. “Typically, there’s not a lot on except football. Back in the day, it was Lions and somebody. Go watch Matthew Stafford throw for 300, 400-something yards with Calvin Johnson and probably lose the game. But it was fun to watch.”

Not only did Burrow throw in a “back in the day” when talking about Stafford playing on Thanksgiving, but he also pointed to the Lions’ losing ways. Which, he’s not wrong about.

Funny enough, Stafford is the all-time leader in passing yards on Thanksgiving with 3,000, according to The Athletic, so he really was racking up the yards in losing efforts.

In his career, Stafford is 4-6 on Thanksgiving with 18 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions, including three pick-sixes. The Lions’ defense gave up at least 23 points in all of Stafford’s losses, and no more than 17 points in his wins.

Ironically, Burrow could be in a similar situation this Thanksgiving as Stafford was most of his career, throwing for a million yards on a team with a defense that can’t stop anyone.
