One might wonder why Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has rushed back to a 3-8 team at all.

One might simply not understand Joe Burrow (or pro athletes in general, really) all that well.

Set to return just in time for a Thanksgiving encounter with the Baltimore Ravens, Burrow met with reporters for the first time since his injury and explained his thought process.

“You look at it from my perspective: I am a football player. If I get hurt, I am going to go through the rehab process, and then I am going to let everyone know when I can play," Burrow said. “I will not ever go to someone and say, ‘Yeah, I’m healthy, but I’m not going out there and play. I am never ever going to live my life being scared that something may happen.”

Burrow also noted, in a funny way, how much playing on Thanksgiving has always been a goal:

Burrow’s Grade 3 turf toe seemed positioned to keep him out until mid-December. He was, instead, seemingly available for last weekend’s loss to the New England Patriots.

A return and even winning the rest of their games might not get Burrow and the Bengals to the playoffs. And yes, he’s also getting exposed to injury risk again.

Yet, it’s hard not to admire the very human reasons for a football player wanting to be out there with his team, right?
