Netflix's live-action Assassin's Creed show has cast its first major lead role in a promising production update for the video game adaptation. Netflix's Assassin's Creed series was originally announced in 2020 as part of a deal with video game studio Ubisoft. Since then, however, there have been sparse updates about production or when the series might come out.
Now, Deadline reports that Toby Wallace has been cast as the co-lead in the live-action Assassin's Creed adaptation. Much like the original video game series, the TV show will focus on the fight between two organizations, presumably the Assassins and the Templars. Details about Wallace's character haven't been revealed, but the series' characters will differ from those in the games.
Toby Wallace in The Bikeriders
Wallace previously starred as Campbell Eliot in the 2019 Netflix teen drama The Society. Since then, he's gone on to star in films such as The Bikeriders and Finestkind, while also portraying guitarist Steve Jones in the 2022 FX miniseries Pistol. He'll also have a starring role in the upcoming Euphoria season 3, arriving in 2026.
The Assassin's Creed TV series is headed by showrunners Roberto Patino (DMZ) and David Wiener (Halo). The show will begin filming in Italy in 2026, which is also expected to be its setting. It hasn't been revealed what time period it will take place in, but it could pull from Assassin's Creed II, which took place during the Italian Renaissance.
This series is separate from the animated Assassin's Creed TV show being developed by Adi Shankar. The creator, who also made Netflix's Devil May Cry adaptation, announced the series in 2017, though nothing concrete has been revealed about its production. It seems Ubisoft will be prioritizing the franchise's live-action rendition, with Wallace's casting being a huge step for the series.
The announcement comes as Ubisoft faces a financial shakeup. Last week, the studio announced Chinese tech conglomerate Tencent had made an investment worth over $1 billion. Although the studio's latest game, Assassin's Creed Shadows, boasted a 3 million player count at its height, Ubisoft's stock price has fallen by over 91% in the last five years.
The Assassin's Creed TV show marks a new era for the studio. With Wallace lending his talent as the series' co-lead, the new story told through this different medium could breathe new life into the series that Ubisoft needs. With the series filming next year, more information about Wallace's role and other cast members are bound to arrive in due time.
