The New York Mets missed the postseason last season, and they need to make some big moves in free agency to avoid this kind of disappointment again next season. The Mets have already added Marcus Semien in a trade with the Texas Rangers.
But they're set to lose Edwin Diaz in free agency. Jim Bowden of The Athletic projected Diaz to sign a huge $88 million deal this winter. As a result, the Mets are going to need to spend a lot of money to retain their All-Star closer.
Bleacher Report's Erik Beaston recently predicted the Mets would retain Diaz on a huge contract in free agency this winter.
..."The Mets already have significant work to do with their bullpen and ensuring its finest piece, an All-Star closer who has rarely been the problem when it comes to New York's pitching woes, should be a priority," Beaston wrote. "How willing Díaz is to take a shorter deal will ultimately determine if the two teams continue their partnership."
Diaz is one of the best closers in baseball, and the Mets have the money to sign him.
If New York wants to get back to the postseason, it's going to need to make big moves like this. Diaz could be signed as one star for the Mets, but they'd need to add some stars to the lineup, too.
The Mets are likely going to be in the market for starting pitching, too. Still, signing Diaz to a huge deal would be a good step for the Mets this winter.
