By Cole SullivanShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberThe Dallas Cowboys are coming off a dramatic comeback win Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, erasing a 21-0 deficit to take a 24-21 victory and improve to 5-5-1 on the season.
Amid the celebration, questions remain about the future of star wide receiver George Pickens, acquired this offseason in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Pickens has exceeded expectations in Dallas, but he’s due for a contract extension this offseason. Given his current performance, it’s likely to be a significant deal if owner Jerry Jones hopes to keep him in Dallas long-term.
The Cowboys could also use the franchise tag, but while that provides a substantial one-year salary, it doesn’t offer the stability or long-term security that top-tier players typically seek—sometimes leading to holdouts or delayed reporting to training camp.
Still, Jones sounded optimistic about Pickens’ future, offering a subtle hint ahead of Dallas’ Week 13 matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.
“At this time we've got two No. 1 receivers and that’s just exceptional right at the time when—guess what—our quarterback is probably the best he's ever been and there's more there,” Jones said during his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan. “Listen, there's nothing that we can do—I know it's fun—there's nothing we can gain from speculating and conjecture. The bottom line is we're in good shape.”

Against the Eagles, Pickens hauled in nine catches for 146 yards and a touchdown, following a nine-catch, 144-yard, one-touchdown performance on “Monday Night Football” against the Las Vegas Raiders.
This season, he’s established himself as one of the league’s top wide receivers, surpassing 1,000 receiving yards with 1,054, while totaling 67 receptions and eight touchdowns.
One way or another, Pickens is going to be paid—whether by the Cowboys or elsewhere—but for now, he remains focused on helping Dallas win. Currently, the team sits just outside the NFC playoff picture.
