Howie Noel, who goes by @dicktracyroguegallery on social media, was always a hidden gem of an artist with his hallmark retro/caricature style and vintage, film noir aesthetic—until he effectively went viral, thanks to Superman director James Gunn—who discovered his work. While the scope of his art is vast, the name of his Instagram account is a tribute to his late father. Noel was always enamored with this iconic sleuth, sketching him when he was a child and bonding with his dad while reading the weekly Dick Tracey newspaper strip with him. Eventually, as an accomplished creator, in adulthood, he became the Official Dick Tracy guest artist in 2024 (from Oct 6-20).

Additionally, Noel has also always been a longstanding superhero fan who has previously showcased sketches of Batman, Joker, and, Catwoman—so when Noel caught wind that the Superman film that was set to debut in the summer of 2025, he was inspired to create comic art in his signature style from the film previews that were circulating. "I knew I wanted to draw something from the trailer, it completely inspired me and I wanted to be very timely with it," he explained.

Ultimately, it was this iconic piece of art, where Superman is lying in the snow with Krypto watching over him that would change everything. "I drew it, posted it shortly after the trailer dropped, and shared it on my socials. James commented, shared it and then Warner Bros. and all the official Superman accounts commented and liked it," he added. It spread like wildfire, racking up nearly 20 million in views and engagement. In addition to Gunn, many people from the Superman cast/crew loved Noel's work including VFX Supervisor Stef Ceretti and Eddie Davenport, who was Superman/David Corenswet's stunt-double.

The viral moment led to many incredible opportunities for Noel which included getting his comic book art to Polax X and their offices in Svalbard. "The company was celebrating their involvement in filming the Fortress of Solitude scenes in James Gunn's Superman movie. They took my art to the exact location where the scenes were filmed and sent me this amazing photo! What a dream," explained Noel. He was also asked to do Superman comic book art upon request from several stunt coordinators and performers; he got to create the wrap gift for the Krypto team at Framestore FX; and lastly, his art has been showcased by IMAX on motion posters across the country.

Noel is still actively drawing a lot of timely comic book art that speaks to pop culture influences, then featuring it on social media (where anyone can commission these pieces). In addition to his continued Superman homages, more recently, he's done sketches from the Peacemaker series and Foxy Shazam to much fanfare (including praise from the aforementioned band that was featured in the Season 2 Finale of Peacemaker). "Overall, I’ve been very fortunate—my Superman art really resonated with a lot of people. And then for it to continue, has been amazing," he adds.
