After loss to the Browns, Raiders coach Pete Carroll fires Chip Kelly

LAS VEGAS - After seeing his offense give up 10 sacks on Sunday in a 24-10 loss to the Browns, Raiders coach Pete Carroll didn’t wait long to make a change.

Carroll fired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly on Sunday evening shortly after the game ended.

The Raiders ran 75 plays against Cleveland but produced only 268 yards, and much of it came late in the fourth quarter when the game had been decided. Las Vegas was 4 of 17 on third-down conversions and 1 of 3 on fourth-down conversions.

The Raiders fell to 2-9 and are firmly in last place in the AFC West. The Browns moved to 3-8.

“I spoke with Chip Kelly earlier this evening and informed him of his release as offensive coordinator of the Raiders,” Carroll said in a statement. “I would like to thank Chip for his service and wish him all the best in the future.”

Kelly was in his first season with the Raiders.

Last season, he was the offensive coordinator at Ohio State, where he helped the Buckeyes win the national championship.

Kelly and OSU coach Ryan Day have a long relationship. Kelly was Day’s offensive coordinator during his days as a quarterback at New Hampshire, where Kelly coached from 1994 through 2006. Day played at New Hampshire from 1998 through 2001.

Both Kelly and Day are natives of Manchester, N.H., and were able to reconnect after the 2023 season when Kelly left UCLA, where he had been head coach, and joined Day in Columbus.
