FX is officially heading into open-world chaos, as the network has ordered a live-action series adaptation of Ubisoft’s Far Cry franchise, with Noah Hawley and Rob Mac (formerly McElhenney) co-creating the project — and Mac set to star. The series will premiere on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally, marking the first live-action TV adaptation in the franchise’s 20-year history.
Like the games, the Far Cry series will adopt an anthology format, with each season featuring new characters, new villains, and new locations. FX and Ubisoft are staying quiet on the exact plot details for now, but given the source material’s history of tropical dictators, cult leaders, gun-toting revolutionaries, and absolutely unhinged antagonists, there’s no shortage of directions Hawley and Mac could take this world. Mac expressed his excitement in a statement, saying:
“Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized. Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”
This marks yet another major collaboration between Mac and FX. He’s already the creative force behind It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the longest-running live-action sitcom in American history, and he also stars in FX’s Emmy-winning docuseries Welcome to Wrexham. Hawley, meanwhile, has become synonymous with FX’s prestige programming, creating the award-winning anthology Fargo, the genre-bending Legion, and most recently, the hit sci-fi series Alien: Earth.
Why Is 'Far Cry' Getting a TV Series?
Hawley praised the game’s anthology structure, noting how naturally it aligns with his own storytelling sensibilities. “What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme,” he said. “To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true.”
Mac will executive produce via More Better Productions, while Hawley will executive produce under his overall deal with FX and Disney Entertainment Television through 26 Keys. Additional executive producers include Emilia Serrano (26 Keys), Nick Frenkel (3 Arts), Jackie Cohn (More Better), John Campisi, and Ubisoft’s Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill. FX Productions will produce the series.
FX Entertainment president Nick Grad expressed confidence in the powerhouse pairing, saying, “FX has had magnificent partnerships with Rob Mac and Noah Hawley for a combined six series and 32 seasons of television, and we couldn’t be more excited that they are teaming up for Far Cry. I have no doubt that they will tell this story in a way that is original, gripping and wildly entertaining.”
Stay tuned for more updates.
